DID YOU KNOW// NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS

With the start of the New Year, people have made resolutions to create improvements in their lives through changes in health and habits. The tradition to set resolutions was established thousands of years ago.

Over 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians were the first to record New Year festivities. They held a 12-day festival to mark the agricultural season around the spring equinox. In 46 B.C. in Rome, Julius Caesar introduced the new calendar and marked January 1 as the beginning of the New Year. In the 18th century, Christians would hold mass on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. The church service provided a time to reflect on the past year and propose resolutions to start the new year with a fresh beginning.

Today, New Year’s resolutions are a common practice around the world. Over 50% of people will set a goal and only roughly 9% of people will complete their new resolutions. Experts suggest to write down your goal or have a friend encourage you through accountability.

Below are some ideas to implement as resolutions for the start of 2024.

► Attend a new activity each month to experience all the offerings at Copperfield Hill.

► Sit at a different dining table to meet new friends.

► Attend the morning exercise class offered 4 days a week. Start with even 1 day a week.

► Take a daily walk around the atrium.

► Read a book from the Copperfield Hill library.

ASK THE EXPERT // Life Without Loneliness

This month focuses on physical and mental health, because when we are healthier, we are safer! I recently read a US-based study that concluded older adults who are lonely and/or socially isolated have a significantly higher risk of developing dementia.  The study concluded that enhancing social engagement and reducing loneliness had a number of significant health benefits, including reducing the risk of developing dementia.

One of the key factors that went into the design of Copperfield Hill was to have our residents live a “Life Without Loneliness.”  My grandmother, who was one of Copperfield Hill’s very first residents, was THE social butterfly! She was sharp as a tack and always had a big smile on her face. The health benefits of her social life were very clear! So, this month, I encourage you to take advantage of the MANY opportunities here in our community to engage with others.  Check out the activity calendar, or talk to someone you haven’t before, you might make a new friend.

If you have a suggestion for an activity, please contact your community’s Activity/Recreation Specialist. They love suggestions and ideas.  This month set a goal to get more involved in our fun and friendly community.  Remember, science shows you will be happier, healthier, and of course, safer, as a result!

How We Got Through It

In March of 2020, we could never have imagined what lay ahead for our world and our community. As we look back on the past sixteen months, we can see an evolution. Navigating the uncertain waters of the pandemic will no doubt be remembered as the biggest challenge we know. Our reactions, teamwork, attitudes, sense of humor and determination are all pieces of the puzzle that when put together, pulled us through. We all looked out for our neighbors, co-workers and all the individuals who support Copperfield Hill. We learned a lot and as we creep back to normalcy, when asked what helped us get through, residents and staff gave us their thoughts:

♥ Activities with Beth and Erin

♥ Staying in touch with people through work, seeing family, time with my husband, Zoom/phone calls and prayer time with God

♥ Essential Caregivers, my car, activities

♥ Allowing me to move in to Copperfield Hill during the pandemic

♥ Daily Delights and the activities cart that visited the apartments, weekly COVID updates were informative and encouraging, the staff> Calmness and support from the residents, they endured a lot and it was done with kindness

♥ Faith in God

♥ Family support of my belief to wear a mask and follow mandates

♥ Prayers, thank you notes/emails from residents and families

♥ Painting my house, yard work and watching Netflix with family

♥ Family, friends, my dog and lots of good books

♥ My strong faith in Christ and love for helping people

Our lives were all changed, but the main comment in regards to what got us through, was the presence of human connection. That is something we have and cherish at Copperfield Hill!

It may be cold outside…

…but inside we are keeping busy and staying strong!  Our Recreation and Wellness Coordinators have been leading the charge on Valentine’s themed arts and crafts and cookie decoration!  Happy hour was a hit as we welcomed some much loved music and refreshments.  Socially distanced, of course!  On the 10th of February, many were able to receive the second of their COVID vaccines.  It was a busy day as our partners from Walgreens kept us all in line and moving along.

Life is a Series of Experiences…

A Timely Message – January 22, 2021

This vaccine will change the world and because of residency in a high priority community, we will be fortunate enough to receive the vaccine sooner than most. I expect that this will bring back normalcy to our lives.

As the founder of Copperfield Hill, and a proud member of our generation, I will be on hand when the providers come to administer the vaccine at Copperfield Hill and be the first to be vaccinated. I have full faith and confidence in the sciences and doctors who have developed this life saving vaccine and want to demonstrate my commitment to you that it is safe and life giving for all the residents of Copperfield Hill. You have shown your faith in our staff and our community by choosing to let us provide for your safety, comfort, wellness and well-being. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

ASK THE EXPERT

Laughter is the best medicine…

Staying healthy sometimes seems like a lot of work.  One way to increase our wellness is to simply laugh.  Life isn’t always funny, but there are good reasons, both physically and emotionally, to laugh!

  • Laughter makes us healthier.  It lowers our blood pressure, reduces stress hormones and increases muscle flexion.  It increases the circulation of antibodies in the blood stream and makes us more resistant to infection.

  • Laughter touches our soul. Laughter is good for us physically – it’s good for the soul.  It brings us closer to one another and there is something that is wonderful about that.  Sometimes laughter catches us by surprise and that can make us feel great.

  • Laughter keeps things in perspective.  Laughter helps us lighten up and take ourselves less seriously.

  • Laughter helps us stay positive.  Laughter helps us keep our troubles in perspective and that can help us stay positive.  It creates positive emotions and thus a positive frame of mind.  Laughter is much like changing a babies diaper.  It doesn’t last long but it sure helps in the short term.

  • Laughter is loving.  We laugh at our mistakes and foibles.  We find humor with our friends and family.  We laugh together.  These positive experiences give us the gifts of joy and love.

September 2020: Notes from Nursing

During these uncertain times, daily routines have been drastically changed.  However, one thing that has not changed, is our commitment and service for our residents here at Copperfield Hill.   We are happy to report that some things are back on schedule.  Here are a few things to note:

Podiatry feet

Podiatry appointments have resumed for residents in both The Manor and The Lodge.  Residents in The Lodge must sign up with the nursing department.  Residents in The Manor may sign up in the front office with the Concierge.  Please contact our nursing staff if you have questions.

Flu ShotsPicture5

Flu shots will be offered to residents in both The Manor and The Lodge. Sign up will be available with the Concierge.  We are encouraging all residents and staff to get a flu shot this fall.  Please have your insurance information available.

Essential CaregiversPicture4

Based on the guidance of the MN Department of Health, Copperfield Hill is welcoming “Essential Caregivers” on campus.  An Essential Caregiver is a third party caregiver that at this time during the pandemic, will provide in-person care and assistance to a resident of Copperfield Hill.  All determinations are made on a case by case basis.  Determinations are based on an assessment by the RN and a consultation with the Executive Director.

Beginning at the end of July, Copperfield Hill has welcomed a number of Essential Caregivers.  There are very strict guidelines and policies in place for this program.  Please consult your building manager if you have questions.

Staying active in Memory Care

There are many ways that Copperfield Hill residents are staying busy during the Quarantine. No doubt, it has been a very challenging time. However, it is essential to keep busy and occupied with stimulating and safe activities that keep us all connected.*

*All activities follow social distancing guidelines.

Here are a few examples:

Manicures and Pedicures. Any day is a good day to relax and get pampered.

Enjoying the Secure Outdoor Patio. At Copperfield Hill we have a secure patio space for residents to get outside safely. Many like to sit outside and get fresh air, but this space also allows us to GARDEN.
